People’s Development Foundation, Sierra Leone Launched in Kono District

The People’s Development Foundation Sierra Leone (PDF-SL) was officially launched in Kono District, drawing participants from key stakeholders including Paramount Chiefs from all 14 chiefdoms and representatives, senior district officers, political party representatives, district council councilors, and community leaders.

The launch event was marked by a strong show of unity and commitment to grassroots development, as traditional leaders and government representatives pledged their support to the initiative.
Welcoming the PDF-SL team, the Chairman of the Council of Paramount Chiefs in Kono District, PC Saa Edward Mbawa, expressed his admiration for the foundation’s vision and assured the team of the chiefs’ full support. “We believe in the vision and mission of the People’s Development Foundation,” he stated. “As traditional leaders, we are committed to working hand in hand to ensure that this initiative reaches every corner of our chiefdoms.”

The Chairman of the Kono District Council, Mr. Sahr Augustine Sheku, lauded the foundation’s focus on strengthening chiefdom and sectional governance structures. He noted that much of the groundwork for such a foundation had already been laid by his council. “Since assuming office, we have prioritized the reestablishment of structures at the chiefdom and sectional levels,” he said. “This aligns directly with the foundation’s core objective empowering villages, sections, and chiefdoms to take ownership of their development.” Mr. Sheku emphasized the district council’s commitment to meaningful partnerships that advance sustainable development in the region.

The Founder of the People’s Development Foundation, Alpha Osman Timbo Esq., delivered a detailed presentation outlining the foundation’s structure and operational strategy. Using his hometown of Sanda Tendaren Chiefdom as a case study, he illustrated how well-organized chiefdom and sectional structures, paired with accurate data collection, are critical for planning and implementing development initiatives.

Timbo stressed the vital role of Paramount Chiefs, Chiefdom Secretaries, and Section Secretaries in maintaining detailed records and documentation of community activities. “Our vision is rooted in the power of data,” he said. “Development cannot be random it must be informed by real-time, accurate information about people, places, and needs.”

He was quick to point out that the foundation is not aligned with any political ideology. “This is not a political movement,” he affirmed. “This is the people’s movement. We are here to support the development of communities across Sierra Leone based on facts, collaboration, and shared responsibility.”

The launch of the People’s Development Foundation Sierra Leone in Kono marks a significant step forward in the decentralization and empowerment of local communities through data-driven development. As momentum builds, stakeholders expressed optimism that the initiative will be a model for sustainable, inclusive growth throughout the country.
